Drawings From the 14th Naval District 1 - 1000
About The Drawings
The size, quality, and type of drawings produced during the Second World War is quite divergent. Their sizes range from 18" X 24" to 3 feet by 8 feet or greater in length.
The quality runs the gamet from very good to poor, remember these drawings are more than 70 yers old. Many have been in vertical files, in other words they are folded in any way to make them fit. These are the most difficult to scan as the folds DO NOT flatten out but remain as a ridges and show up in the scan, these folds are a nuisance, however, so far there has been no impact durining scanning to interpert information or dimensions.
The drawings can be an actual blue print, blue background with white lines and lettering, or a black and white drawing. Where we have copies of the 'blue print'. They have been 'photoshopped', turned into a black and white drawing, making the drawing easier to read and less costly to print. There are also some drawings that are a photocopy type of drawing. Over the years these have faded and much of the data on the drawing is quite difficult to scan. Again these photocopied drawings have been 'photoshopped' to improve and enhance readability. There are limits in the ability of photoshop to render a readiable copy of a drawing and you will be notified in advance if there are problems.
The costs for drawings can become very expensive quite quickly:
All drawings are 'oversize', meaning they are larger than the scan area of a 12" X 17" flatbed scanner, and according to the NARA regulations for scanning of oversize items "...the document can not 'over hang' the scanner...nor can you back fold the document...'. thus the only way to scan a drawing is to have NARA do it, buy a $25,000 scanner, or pay some one to do it for you. Hint..Hint.
